National Apprenticeship Week is a reminder of something Corbins has believed for a long time: the best investment in this industry is in the people doing the work. Apprenticeship isn’t just a path to a Journeyman\u2019s license; it’s where careers are shaped, habits are formed, and the next generation of leaders gets its start. We asked a few of our previous apprentices to share their story, to get a deeper look into what their start in the trades was like.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sean Benavidez, Craft Training Manager<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

CNM & IEC Apprenticeships<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For three straight semesters, Sean was on the job from 6 am to 3 pm, then in the classroom from 4 pm to 9 pm, Monday through Friday. This was only the beginning. By the time he journeyed out, he’d completed two separate apprenticeship programs – first at Central New Mexico Community College, then with Contratistas el\u00e9ctricos independientes (IEC)<\/a> – building a foundation that went well beyond how to do the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It helped me understand installation, code, and the theory behind electrical work. Not just how to do it, but why it is done that way.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

His advice to current and future apprentices is to take school seriously and think beyond wearing your tools forever. Challenge yourselves to explore the leadership, training, planning, and project work sides of this trade to see what other types of impact can be made. After nearly two decades in the field, Sean now channels that perspective as a Craft Training Manager, spending the last five years building up the next generation that\u2019s joined the electrical trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The most rewarding part for me is seeing someone pick something up, gain confidence, and knowing you had a hand in that.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Briana Contreras, Foreman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IEC Apprenticeship<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Briana went through the IEC program and found that its real value was in how it combined hands-on work with classroom depth. She developed both the practical skills to perform and the technical understanding to know why each task matters. That combination is what made her stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a Foreman, Briana’s advice reflects the mindset that got her there. In the short term, she urges that there is no faster way to grow than to stay curious and ask questions. In the long run, it comes down to consistency and the willingness to keep building, even when you feel like you’ve already figured it all out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shannon Denetsosie, Quality Technician <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WECA Apprenticeship <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shannon shares the same sentiment, stating, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cDon\u2019t take the easy route, challenge yourself, and once you\u2019ve mastered a skill, push further by expanding into new areas.<\/em>\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Growth in the trades doesn\u2019t stop when the program ends, and neither should your curiosity.\u00a0Her time with Asociaci\u00f3n de Contratistas El\u00e9ctricos del Oeste (WECA) <\/a>gave her a strong understanding of electrical safety, codes, and best practices, while deepening her appreciation for the trade and the many paths it offers. Shannon\u2019s time as an apprentice strengthened her confidence in the code book, overall field knowledge, and continues to support her work today as a Quality Technician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aaron Booth, General Superintendent <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ABA at Gateway College<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aaron completed the ABA program at Gateway College, gaining a strong advantage early in his career through a combination of hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of electrical theory and motor controls. As the class size steadily decreased over the years, his level of commitment was proof of the dedication the program demanded and the edge it created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, now as a General Superintendent, he has seen apprenticeship programs evolve significantly, with apprentices now taking on more complex work earlier in their training and benefiting from schedules that allow for more focused time in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He acknowledges what separates those who grow quickly from those who stall, and his advice cuts right to it: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be intimidated by the four-year commitment. The time goes by fast, and the investment will continue to set you apart throughout your career.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
