Electricity respects no one, not even the best: Mark’s Journey to Becoming a Quality Superintendent

For Mark Meija, the art of being an electrician was always something he took pride in. Learning updated regulations, mastering techniques, utilizing new technologies and tools, it all intrigued him. Initially, Mark didn’t understand the procedures of Quality Control professionals on a job site and, as most people do, misinterpreted their true role on a project. In addition to a lack of confidence in his leadership skills, he felt unsure about taking the next step in his career, so how did he find himself where he is today? Explore Mark’s journey into becoming a Quality Superintendent with Corbins here:

10 years of Knowledge Added Up

After working as a traveling Journeyman electrician for 10 years, Mark earned many different licenses across various states throughout the country. Because of this, Mark retained a vast knowledge base of electrical standards that needed to be met in the quality of builds.

However, Mark didn’t always see himself in a position of leadership. As he reflected, he noted that in his younger years, he lacked the tactics to effectively communicate with others and was more focused on getting the work done right himself, rather than guiding others on how to help the team’s overall objectives. Before his time at Corbins, he worked with his brother-in-law, who was a Field Superintendent, and began shaping his leadership skills. Once joining Corbins, he leaned on mentors Victor Gallegos (Quality Superintendent) and Fred Lane (Quality Manager) to define himself as a leader in our company, building his way up to his current Superintendent position.

After long days in the field, Mark would find time with these mentors in his career to reflect on his day’s work and how he could improve at leading the others in his crew. This initiative to build relationships around his own career growth is what led Mark to find his way into the QA/QC leadership position he holds now, where he’s able to serve others the way he once was served.

Molding Tomorrow’s Leaders With Today’s Efforts

Once Mark joined Corbins as a journeyman, he learned of the potential to join the QA/QC team. As a Quality Technician, he would grow to the leadership position he holds today, Quality Superintendent. Now, Mark holds the skills to effectively lead a group of QA/QC professionals, as well as communicate with others on site.

Once young and now seasoned, Mark relies on his skills of communication to make a career out of details, criticism, and most importantly, praise. Known industry-wide as a group to tell people what is wrong, Mark looks to change the reputation of QA/QC professionals as a group that is looking to give props just as much as they are looking to give critiques. Mark understands that praise can be just as effective as criticism, and after finding the importance of building his relationships with everyone on site, he has learned that in those relationships, he finds the comfort to freely criticize, but also praise those responsible for the work he inspects.

Through his determination to foster effective and meaningful connections with those inside and outside of his quality control team, Mark has learned that his job involves much more than just knowing code. Mark finds the human connection to be an essential part of how to succeed in his role as a Quality superintendent.

Mark’s philosophy in quality control is to help shape electricians to be the best they can be, focusing on the people behind the project. This mindset aligns directly with Nox Group’s commitment to humanizing construction by elevating the people behind the work, not just the work itself.
