Career Development and Company Culture Within the Construction Industry

Our team is made up of many people who possess a range of skills and come from unique backgrounds. Kye Kenny, Field Engineer, and Florencio (Flo) Orozco, Project Engineer, recently sat down with us to talk about their roles and responsibilities in the field, our company culture, their future goals, and what led them to the construction industry.

Q. What is your role and what are your responsibilities onsite?

Kye – As a Field Engineer, my main role is to assist the field with whatever they need, whether that be hands-on in ordering materials, or being by their side to walk scopes and do markups onsite. Ultimately making sure the team is prepared and properly equipped.

Flo – I am a Project Engineer and I do a lot of coordinating with Nox Innovations on project layouts in BIM and prefabricated material kits. I also work closely with subcontractors to track goals and costs, and earlier on I did a lot of procurement and preplanning.

Q. What got you interested in the construction industry? Did you think you would be working in the skilled trades? What excited you the most about the construction industry that has made you stay?

Kye – I didn’t have much of a background in construction, I got lucky to work for Corbins. I was able to talk to leadership about the role and opportunities available which led me to my career here. What excites me is that each day is something new, with no repetition, and I am able to see the progress of the buildings over time. Being a part of the work coming to life is fulfilling.

Flo – When I was 16, I had a girlfriend whose dad was a small electrical subcontractor who gave me my first job. It was online and I worked part-time as a young father. I fell in love with construction and haven’t left since, even during the 2008 recession and the hard times that followed.

Q. Why Corbins? What made you choose Corbins as the company at this point in your career journey?

Kye – When I started at Corbins everyone was very kind and welcoming. I was quick to catch on that there are so many great resources because they make them so readily available, specifically the APEX* gym. Having these resources so accessible has been a great asset and aid in my desire to continue growing personally and professionally.

Flo – I started with Corbins in December of 2022. The market made me want to work for a great company and make great friends along the way. I was initially taken to Nox Innovations where I saw how scaled the VDC and fabrication departments were and I was in shock. I had to weigh my options as sometimes moving up the ladder isn’t always the step to take. What I’ve found is that sometimes moving left or right is the way, so you learn and grow more.

Q. How do you two collaborate with each other? How do you collaborate with the rest of the team on-site?

Kye – I work with the team and feel heavily involved. My favorite thing to do is layouts with the Trimble. This gives me pride in feeling like all teams associated with the project helped with the installation to ensure an effective workload.

Flo – With the way jobs are set up, Project Engineers intertwine with Field Engineers a lot. Kye works with guys on the roof and outside, and I work with Kye to get what is needed which includes planning out any impacts to the schedule.

Q. What are the characteristics of a leader you admire?

Kye – Confidence is key—a confident leader is a good leader. Also having a friendship element of the relationship can help with growth I’ve found. I admire a leader who isn’t afraid to provide feedback and make sure we have the tools needed to succeed.

Flo – I admire seeing people follow through with the commitments they say they’re going to follow through with. By doing this, you build your team up so much better if your words match your actions. The little wins start to stack up on top of each other, which is a great sign.

Q. Who in our enterprise would you consider to be a great leader, and why?

Kye – Our Project Executives and Project Managers are great, they are open to telling you what you’re doing right, and what you could still work on. They are always looking for ways to help strengthen our skills and help us grow.

Flo – One of our General Superintendents that I have worked with for a very long time and have learned a lot from I would consider a great leader. Our Project Managers are also awesome, they set an example for us and show us the growth potential available to us.

Q. What is a career goal of yours in the next couple of years?

Kye – My main focus is making myself and the company better by ultimately cutting costs, fixing processes, and being proactive. I also appreciate my ability to expand my knowledge which can be an aid to help with company growth.

Flo – I want to help propel the company to a different level. Being on large projects right now is pretty competitive so I want to make improvements in processes and procedures. Kye and I are constantly thinking about how we can be the most efficient and effective in the field.
